Would this help, or weaken the box more?

I was wondering if I ran some threaded rod inbetween the middle if that would help, or make the box even weaker than it already is? What would you say?

The ports are external.

I don't think stabilizing the ports are going to weaken the box.

I may have wordered wrong. I knwo stablizing the ports will be ok. But I was concerned about drilling a hole in the middle of the wood between all four port cutouts to run some rod, if that would weaken it too much? Since it's such a small area.

Guess I could always get some thinner rod than usual.

Just make sure the washers are wide and tighten the inside first so that it has support before you tighten the outside; don't want to crush it.

I went ahead and did it. Just got some smaller rod that way I didn't have to drill to big of a hole.

I would build a piece around it, but the show is friday night, and I got practice tomorrow so no time really. Just had to do something quick.

Did you consider doubling up the wall as well?

Steel is very strong under tension, there is no need to use a large diameter threaded rod. Leave a tiny bit of space to tighten against between the internal nut and the inner wall and the box will keep the rod under tension and will stabilize the box dimensions. Another option is to run the rod through a piece of pipe cut to the exact dimensions of the inside of the box. The pipe is strong under compression and the rod is strong under tension. Add a fender washer on both sides of the box wall to spread the load and it shouldn't flex a bit.
