Workout thread..

4) Stretching makes you weak!! If you hold a muscle on stretch for 20-30 seconds you are telling your nervous system to down-regulate/inhibit that muscle. THis is a bad idea prior to lifing any type of weights or doing any type of athletic events. You should only strectch tight muscles at the right time and for specific reasons. Stretching in general has not shown to be effective for improving performance or reducing injury in sport...reread the first sentence and you will understand why.
I'm skeptical of this point, so you may need to elaborate. More specificly, your comment on not stretching before any type of athletic event. I don't stretch to prevent a muscle tear, I stretch to prevent tendon damage and subsequent pain. I'm a professional armwrestler, and I wouldn't even think of competing without stretching, or even practicing without doing so. I've seen first hand the results of not doing so, and I've felt them as well.

If stretching is counterproductive, is it simply ignorance and voodoo that cause every professional and amateur athelete to stretch before they take part in their respective sports? Curious.

Wait a day between working the same muscles.
When doing pec/shoulder/tricep machines, what difference do you get between keeping your clenched fist parallel to your body vs perpendicular?

edited for spelling

Wait a day before before working same muscles? If you only have to wait one day, you're not hitting the muscle group hard enough. I have to wait just over 1 week until I can hit my legs again because the recovery takes a while. If I did them twice a week I'd end up with an overtraining issue.

Having a defective shoulder sucks. Haven't hit chest in around 5.5 months. If it ever gets to a fairly normal state I'll do push ups, but I don't think I'll ever hit bench again.

Have lost bi and tri and shoulder size as I've had to hit these sparingly. I currently work out 2X a week hitting abs and legs mainly. Bi's every 2 or 3 weeks. Legs have blown up from when I started working them until now.

Well if it's working for you I can't argue with that. I should be more specifiec in saying that certain TYPES of stretching are in fact counterproductive. If you were a sprinter and stretched out like a dancer or ballerina before running at max speed you would surely NOT post a PB!

Also not EVERY professional and amateur athlete participates in stretching before they take part in their sports. True, they almost always WARM UP with a specific routine which is as much metal as it is physical, but they don't really stretch in the true sense of the word.

I recommend you read the following article to clear up any information I have obviously glossed over in my very brief overview of stretching: http://www.mercola.com/2004/sep/18/intelligent_stretching.htm

That clears things up. I figured it was more of a generalization pertaining to the direction of the thread, but I had to be sure. I, as well, obviously generalized with my sweeping "every" comment.

i never stretch in my workouts and during my weight training class freshmen year the teacher said it actually inhibits peak muscle output while working out ( ie benching less while working out because of stretching). however, my friend claims that stretching helps your muscles look better. ( he got it from an Arnold video). i do not believe this at all, but unfortunately i do not have a degree in this and thus cannot give him the technical response to prove him wrong. anyone have one? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Whats a good workout to get your blood flowing... and you sweating? Someone told me to do this one thing... I forgot what its called...but you like stand straight up crouch down and then get into push up mood... then get up and do it again... (know what i mean?)
squat thrusts

Question....

Ive been doing ALOT of curling recently...and ive noticed that its like... harder to fullly extend my arm straight out... not like pain.... but as if its really tight... I think thats a good sign?

I haven't read all the posts but I do want to post something about the "soreness" that you are experiencing.

You experience a soreness in your muscles because of lactic acid build up. When you work out, lactic acid builds up in your muscles and that is why they get sore. One effective way to get rid of this soreness is to drink a lot of water to replenish the oxygen to your muscles or take supplements that help you recover quicker.

I have been working our for about 5 years now on and off, I am 19, and I like working out every muscle group once a week. For example:

Monday-Legs

Tuesday-Chest

Wednesday-Arms

Thursday-my off day

Friday-shoulders and back

you should try to work in some ab work and some cardio whenever.

That is kind of how my workout is right now. If you need some recommendations on exercises for certain muscles I can help you out. I am not big by any means or real into working out, but I have a pretty good knowledge of it.
