Workout thread..

DOMS!
//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif Same excercise more than twice a week is pointless.
I heard that if you do one set of muscales... and let them heal for a couple days... *while working totally different muscales* that its perfectly fine.

i never stretch in my workouts and during my weight training class freshmen year the teacher said it actually inhibits peak muscle output while working out ( ie benching less while working out because of stretching). however, my friend claims that stretching helps your muscles look better. ( he got it from an Arnold video). i do not believe this at all, but unfortunately i do not have a degree in this and thus cannot give him the technical response to prove him wrong. anyone have one? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
Stretching is actually good for preventing injuries. When you work out, your muscles will soon become "tight" and more prone to injury. If you look at any bodybuilder, they do a lot of stretching, it is very good for you. However, I do not think it has any effect on your workout, such as making you weaker or anything like that. I won't lie, I don't stretch much but it is very good for you.

Do the math you dumbass, that's less than 2 times a week.

WTF obviously you fuck tard, but what I was saying was..... that I heard doing that is ok.

4) Stretching makes you weak!! If you hold a muscle on stretch for 20-30 seconds you are telling your nervous system to down-regulate/inhibit that muscle. THis is a bad idea prior to lifing any type of weights or doing any type of athletic events. You should only strectch tight muscles at the right time and for specific reasons. Stretching in general has not shown to be effective for improving performance or reducing injury in sport...reread the first sentence and you will understand why.

Stretching does not make you weak. If it did, bodybuilders would be very weak. Stretching is vital. I was in gymnastics for 10 years, and we stretched for almost an hour every day. I was much stronger pound for pound back then, than I am now. Most muscle injuries are caused by people not stretching enough or properly.

95% of the time, 6-8 reps is ideal for gaining mass. Especially with "core" lifts.

Always go to failure on your last set on your core lifts. (Bench/squat) Trust me, you will feel the pain the next day.
working out is not about feeling the pain the next day.

You should base your workout based on what kind of results you want. If you want to get tone up, do high rep sets.

If you are trying to bulk up or get big, do low reps with heavy weight.

About going to failure, something good to do is negatives. When you can't lift the weight anymore, have someone spot you. Go down with the weight as slow as you possibly can and have someone help you get it up. Do a few of these. They are called negatives and very good for building mass.

You experience a soreness in your muscles because of lactic acid build up. When you work out, lactic acid builds up in your muscles and that is why they get sore.
Ok guys there is a lot of gym science and missunderstanding floating around on there. This is FALSE. Your muscles are sore because they are injured - if you look at the mucle tissue under a microscope you would see that the cells are damaged. In otherwords, your ripped/tore a muscle and it needs to heal. Reread my post up above for your answer as to why or why not to exercise a sore muscle.

Lactic acid is a byproduct of anaerobic metabolism and is responcible for the fatigue you feel when doing rigerous exercise. It doesn't cause sore muscles. It is infact converted to a chemical called piruvate and burned off as an energy substrate within a few hours after your workout...this is why there is such a metabolic effect of anaerobic exercise which can last up to two days in some cases.

Your biceps muscles flex your elbo and very weakly flex your shoulder due to its attachments. If you repeatedly flex your elbo against resistance WITHOUT proper joint stability at the shoulder and without adequate healing time and without proper progression and without exercising the muscle THROUGH A FULL RANGE OF MOTION, then you get some unstable joints, damaged muscle tissue, and short and tight biceps. Your body doesn't want to lengthen it out by extending your elbow all the way out for these very reasons - mostly because you are lifting too heavy of a weight and shortening and tightening that **** thing so much!!!

On a side note about training through a full range of motion. I "work" my abs by doing crunches on a stabliity ball with a full range of motion and a 50 lb dumbell on my chest no more than twice per week for about 4 sets total for the week. That means I do about 40 heavly loaded crunches per WEEK and I have what would most would consider the model midsection (ie. six pack)!! Just some food for thought.

The undertrained athlete always outperforms the overtrained athlete. My advice: work hard, then rest hard. If you cannot best your last workout by at least 1-3% improvement, then you need to rest. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY - NOT TO YOUR BUDDIES IN THE GYM OR THESE GOOFBALLS THAT WRITE THESE RIDICULUS ARTICLES IN MAGAZINES!!

First of all you really don't understand stretching and how to apply it scientifically and second injury is NOT CAUSED by people not stretching enough!! Where is your evidence for this??? Does a cheeta stretch before it chasses a gizelle???

your muscle does not get injured. it is lactic acid. What happens is your body uses lactic acid for energy, and it splits into lactate and the hydrogen ion. And the build up of the hydrogen ion in the muscles is why it gets sore.

So blame it on lactic acid or the hydrogen ion, whichever you want.
