Woot for tax returns. HDTV opinions/guidance needed

Tax return time, plus what I have saved, leaves me with 800-1000 toward a TV. I normally sit at the most, 6 feet away from the TV stand, and only really use it for my Wii, 360, and maybe upconverted DVD's, when the time comes. I don't watch movies often enough to justify another component added to the mess.

Anyhow, given my needs, is a decent 32 or 37 inch good enough at 720p? I understand the idea of future proofing, but eh, if I'm not living here, I'll be in a dorm with even less room.

I'm most interested in Samsung, Sony, toshiba, Sharp, or Philips*really happy with my old 20 inch, PQ and such*. In terms of reliability and service, who should I avoid? As of now, no TV i've ever used has been more than 200, so I want some good CS if my 800+ invetment craps out. Any info is much appreciated. Thank you.

I picked up a 50" Rear Projection Samsung 720p on Black Friday from CC for $800. Does the trick just fine. I only get over the air HD signal and it's no higher than 1080i. The specs were solid... and it was just cheap. So far I love it. I won't be using it in my theater setup but I see no reason not to keep it for the living room.

My advice is to look at rear projections only. From what you're describing it doesn't sound like you have a major hang-up on flat-panels. IMO, you get more for your money with a RP.

Good point bikini, I am not really particular on the display method, so long as it can keep up with any game. I know most plasmas worth their weight have features to prevent burn in*I play a lot of rpg's, racing games, fps' static imags for ammo rosters and such*. Space isn't an issue, as I have crap for furnitire, and plan on keeping it that way. Thanks for the advice so far.

Heard good things about the Vizio.
I LOVE mine.

32" Vizio. Got it for Christmas.

Going to be picking up a PS3 soon to match up with it.

$1000 for a tv I would go with a samsng lcd probably 42" but you can get a 50" rear projection for that price.

werd, we get back 6k. benefits of having 4 kids. I love it.

Projecttions are good, but the price difference seems to only matter at higher sizes. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I'd go with a Vizio 32" LCD. Plenty big if you're that close to the TV. Good pictures, affordable, recommended by the people at G4TV lol. Plus you seem to play a lot of games, and I still don't like the burn-in risk of plasmas.
