craigslist? he's right. woofers cover a substantial amount of midrange, but might not extend as low as a subwoofer.

PA speakers have a high resonant frequency (60-100hz), making them unfit to be called subs.

The accordion cone and surround is a giveaway that those are PA speakers.

There are ranges for specific speakers, tweets, mids, woofers, subwoofers and whatnot. Woofers cover the bottom end of the midrange, and the upper range of the subs.

yeah... Woofer, not a Subwoofer but not quite a Mid-Range. Pulled the below off of some random ones from parts-express, all 12"....

subwoofer: Frequency range 25-125 Hz

woofer: Frequency response 30-1,500 Hz

mid: Frequency Response 200 Hz-5 kHz

Ca.com at its finest. Anything over 8" is not a subwoofer. When your parents were listening to speakers, their cabinets had 12 and 15" woofers as standard. To this day, if you want big sound, you need to move big air.

Biggest I have seen so far is 24" "PDS" IIRC...

They aren't midrange speakers, they're woofers. They cover the lower midrange and bass portion. Most loudspeakers aren't sold with subwoofers as a woofer is usually sufficient for most.
