Wiring two batteries help

It doesn't really matter which battery you ground but I would connect the ground to the battery that is getting power from the alternator, just to keep it the same.

dont you ground both batteries from the negative terminal, then connect a long cable to the positive terminal on each of the batteries together?

Ground both batteries to the chassis, that will, in effect, do the same thing that wire in your picture is doing.
