Wiring led's?

The longer side (anode) is hooked to positive.

The resistor can go on either side.

You can just series 4-5 and won't need a resistor. If the forward voltage is 3.5vdc, you'll need 4 in series to run off a vehicle. If it's around 3vdc, I'd go with 5. Some will take additional voltage while others are very sensitive. The current passed increases substantially as voltage rises.
