Wiring LEDs to pulse with the bass?

How would I go about doing this? I'm talking about a strip of LEDs (like christmas lights). I just bought a cheap strip from walmart, and hooked one wire to the Speaker + terminal on my amp, and the other to the Speaker - terminal, and turned the music on really quiet. They worked great while my stereo volume was on 3, but when I turned it up to 5 (which is barely even loud), they blew up. I knew that was going to happen though. Could someone help me with this? Yes I know, which is why I knew they would blow after just a couple of seconds. I'm asking what I need to do to wire it correctly? Add a resistor? I don't know much about electrical stuff.

make sure you hold the leds in your mouth next time to cool em off.

iirc they make sets specifically with sensors that will pulse to the bass. Look into those.

you can buy a sensor from somewhere, oznium has them for like $10 but they're super sensitive, i wrapped mine in 1" of carpeting and 8 paper towels and It still picked up my highs, if you had it in the trunk it would only serve it's purpose at low volume, at least the one I had. I'm sure they make better ones.
