uh ya.... 8g speaker wire on a 500w sub is stupid... better hope you never blow the sub because the 8g will let that amp burn before the protect can engage

The short-circuit protection will kick in as soon as the outputs are shorted...you're thinking of a fuse.

The only downside to using that large of a gauge is cost, but it's not a safety concern.
