Wiring JL 10w6v2 D4 into 4 ohms

i just bought this JL 10W6v2 subwoofer because i got a good deal on a floor model at the good guys after i blew out my infinity 10 perfect vq which was a SVC @ 4ohms. I am running it on a hifonics 2 channel amplifier running at 600 watts rms @ 4 ohms. Now I know this JL w6v2 has 2 4 ohm voice coils. The installer at the good guys wired it to 4 ohms. I just wanted to know if this is safe and is it able to work at 4 ohms because he has just wired it into one voice coil. I took out the sub and wired it back to 8 ohms because i am unsure if it is safe. I just want others opinions if i should wire it back to 4 ohms as it sounded much better that way. According to the JL sight you should only be running either 2 or 8 ohm depending on the configuration. If he wired just one voicecoil you should go slap him with a 1 gauge cable.

Thanks for your reply, I checked the JL site and saw they recommended the 2 or 8 ohm configs. That is why i wired it back to 8 ohms, but it was sounding so much better at the 4 ohms. I am guessing the installer wired only one voice coil because that is probably the only way to get the speaker at 4 ohms. My amp is a 2 channel so it cannot run bridged at 2 ohms. I was wondering if i should take a chance and wire it at 2 ohms anyways. The amp i have is the hifonics nx600 so any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

What type of power does your amp put out with each channel or the amp going to a 4ohm voicecoil?

the amp is rated at:

150 x2 @ 4 ohms

230 x 2 @ 2 ohms

500 x 1 @ 4 ohms bridged

this is all at 14.4 volts battery.

So that is 300 watts RMS @ 14.4 volts going to that sub. The sub is rated @400 watts RMS so your best bet would be an amp that is around 400-500 watts into a 2 ohm bridged or mono mode. I would look into a different amp, assuming you would like to push the sub to it's potential. You could sell your current amp and take that money and put it towards a new one.

remember to get an amp that will meet you future needs, if you are like most of us you will end up adding another sub. Look into the Hifonics that puts out 500 watts @ 2 ohm and around 1000 for a 1 ohm load. That way if you add another sub you will be running a mono 1 ohm load @ 1000 watts 14.4.
