wiring issue

right now there is a 12 gauge wire ging from my alternator to my starter then eventually goes to the positive battery terminal (ends up being really long route) I was wondering if i could just add a 1 or 4 guage wire from alt directly to battery (positive) (like 1.5 ft).

The ground for the engine block which is the ground for the alt is 1 guauge directly to the negative post. And the chassis is grounded as well with 1 guage.

haha you ^^^^ have a delta 88 too, lol i thought they were extinct, mines a '82 they are boats but reliable, so i guess thats a yes to the wire, 4 or 1 guage? i'm gonna go with 4 because i have some lyin around and maybe do 1 guage later when i get some.

Stock alternator I think is 78 amps, if you have rear window defroster and power windows. 63 amps for non-optioned cars. The alt wiring on my 85 goes straight to the side terminal battery (molded into the cable). It looks to be about 10 gage.

For my meager system it was adequate to connect the 8 gage power wire right to the alternator output stud instead of to the battery. If your system requires 4 gage or fatter, I'd do it like you said.

My 85 will turn 200,000 miles soon... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

well i actually i got my alt rewired for $60 and its 120 at idle and 165 at like 1500 rpm, and i was just makin sure before I installed it back in tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
