Wire too big

The way I fuse wire is based on the amps you are running.
Fuse shouldn't be much higher than all the amps current draw. Which you can tell by looking at your amps fuses.

Local shop is retarded.
Local ship IS retarded, lol. And West, you fuse for wire capacity at the batteries, you fuse for the amps rating at the amps + terminal. Although fusing 4/0 is probably an undertaking in itself, lol. Which would also explain why I've seen people with that exact wire ran without fusing. Which of course I wouldn't recommend. Fusing the wire anywhere inbetween the wire capacity and the amps rating, at the batteries, would work fine, op.

The problem with fusing is by the time the fuse blows the amp will have already been exposed to too much power.

The fuse can only be expected to prevent a fire moreso than protecting your gear, but there is a slim chance that it may save your gear under certain circumstances...

Right. I'm just saying that he should fuse for the wires rating or less at the batts, and whatever limit he wants to set for the amps can still be done at the amps + terminal. He can underfuse that end all he wants, but underfusing at the batts (for the amplifiers rating) takes away the benefit of having such a large wire. The main benefit is less resistance, when you are not using it to get more amperage.
