Wire Size and Fuse Question

Hey guys, I purchased a Pioneer GM-D9601 amp which will be running at 1200 WRMS @ 1 ohm. I also purchased a KnuKonceptz KCA Complete 4 Gauge Amp Installation Kit and noticed that it comes with a 80A fuse but my amp has 3 40A fuses. Should I just get a 120A fuse for this wiring kit or should I return it and get their Kolossus 4 Gauge OFC Amplifier Installation Kit which comes with a 120A fuse but also $40 more? Thanks!

EDIT: Nevermind, I decided to ship the KCA Kit back and purchase the OFC Kit.

Just get a 120 fuse even though ofc thrumps CCA but your only running 1200 watts and not even that after box rise so you'll be ok .oh make sure you try your best to keep moisture from wire however that can be done lol

I would do 4 gauge OFC.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll be paying $20 for a new fuse + holder & shipping so I've decided to ship the old kit back and I've ordered the OFC Kit.

Always fuse to wire size. Not amp draw. Simply putting a 120a fuse on a wire rated for 80 can cause the wire to melt.

That said, the ofc kit was a good choice

If you had chosen to keep the CCA you should also have left the 80A fuse in. It would have worked fine.

That fuse MIGHT have blown if you'd blasted test tones into clipping for an extended period of time. Otherwise, no problem at all.

The ofc's obviously better.

you saying theres no point in fusing to the amp draw? im still a noob when it comes to fuses, and ive been into car audio for over 10 years.. example, im running a q1-4500 soon, it draws 400+ amps, so I bought 4 fuses of 400 amps. 2 near the battery and 2 near the inputs on the amp, my wire is OFC 0 gauge rated at 400 amps 20ft. i should be good to go huh?

You should use two 200a fuses or 250a fuses.. Don't use two 400a fuses

This ^

I'm using 250A fuses between batteries and 200A fuses between the battery and the 4500. SoundQubed manual recommends a 200A fuse for each one of the positive wires between the battery and amp.

so two 200a fuses near the batt, and another two 200a fuses near the positive inputs on the amp?

How far away is your battery from your amp? If it is the one under your hood, then yes fuse within 18" of your battery (two 200A or 250A) and then fuse within 18" of your amp with two 200A fuses. So 4 fuses total, 2 near the battery and 2 near the amp

1 d3400 under the hood and I plan on having another battery in the rear behind my seats. so the second battery will be roughly 2-3ft away from my amp. gna do 1 whole run from the front batt all the way to the amp, then the second positive run from the battery in the rear to the second pos input. so on the first run I fuse 200a under the hood near the batt, then another 200a near the amp. on the second run, just 1 fuse between the 2-3ft run of the positive?

I'm no expert, but why not connect the run from the engine batt to the back batt and then do 2 runs from the back batt to the amp? I just don't think I've ever seen 1 run from an engine batt to the amp and then the second run from the back batt to the amp?

you are absolutely correct, I knew I was doing something wrong, good thing I havnt connected everything yet. but yes, 1 run to the rear battery and from there, 1 fuse on each pos input to the amp. length of the run to the amps will be 2-3ft so I should be good with just 1 fuse on each run to the amp
