windows 7 home premium $29 (students)

how do you go about getting this?
I'm assuming he is referring to the RC, which you can no longer get. Windows 7 is a nice upgrade from XP from my experience with it so far. Definitely getting it for $30 instead of the $50 I already had it preordered for. Thanks for posting this.

To be honest in the benchtests it destroyed XP in terms of speed. There are a few quirks that need worked out as far as software compatibility goes, but thats mostly image mounting software like Daemon Tools that requires special drivers. Other than that almost all software and hardware that works in Vista will be Win7 compatible.
I've had XP, Vista, Win 7, and Ubuntu in my 6 year old laptop. By FAR the best running one is XP. Followed by Win 7, Ubuntu, and finally vista. Having only 384mb of RAM might've had something to do with it though, lol

EDIT: i can get the Win 7 Professional for free legally too.

According to benchtests 7 ousts all except Ubuntu. Ubuntu wasnt part of the test.

As for worst windows it was definitely ME. No questions asked. Its not even up for debate. Its a fact.

Scoobydoo 2Gbs of RAM wont do anything for Vista. Vista uses and optimizes resources differently than Win7. Win7 is much, much more efficient. When is the last time you saw Vista use 27% of your RAM after its been on for more than 6 hours without configuring services and other odds and ends for hours? NEVER

everyday, my HTPC runs vista ultimate 24/7. it has been online for about 4 days and is using the exact same amount of ram as my main laptop which is running win7. both are using approx 900mb and both have 44 processes running

i have had no problems running xp, vista or win7 on any of my pc's. yes win7 is easier to run if your computer specs ****, thats why i switched my laptop over to it last month

however at the same time i also switched out the ssd i was using to a 5400rpm sata drive and it is much slower

the $30 upgrade sale is until Jan 2010, just get the win7 RC and use it for a few months and make the call for themselves

imo, spending the $30 on ram(if you arent maxed) or an ssd/7200rpm drive(if you use a laptop) will get you a better increase in performance than worrying about a switch to win7 just now

you cant still get the RC can you?
And what if you already have 4gigs of ram and a 7200 rpm hdd?
not from microsoft, i am sure it is floating around the net though

if you have 4gb ram and a 7200rpm switch to an ssd and use whatever OS you like cause your machine rocks;)

you really think its worth it going to a SSD drive from a 72K? I pretty much only plan to use this laptop for another year at very most.. its only got a t7500 and a go 9400..

i think it is, i went from a raptor in my desktop to my ssd and the improvement was noticable

if it serves your purpose you may as well wait though since prices drop daily and ssd's will be pretty common in a few years

hmm i just dont think they're in the price/performance sweet spot for laptops yet.. sure the next laptop will have one but probably wont put it in this one..

I do sort of want an airport extreme or a time capsule though..
