Will my old stuff work? A Newbie all over again (long)

Hey everyone.

As my present to myself for getting my car paid off, as well as finishing my first year in college, I decided to finally upgrade the sound in my car (a 2005 Chevy Malibu Classic) a little bit, so it actually sounds better than my computer headset. :p

The 2 main components I want to re-use are my sub, which is an old JL 12W0 in a sealed box, and the Crossfire TEK 75.2 amp that was powering it.

After I had to get rid of my old car I brought the sub in and just let it sit collecting dust in a corner, until I decided to dust it off in hopes it would still be fine for what I want it for now. Do I need to worry about anything when trying to use an old sub?

I've been looking at the following speakers as an upgrade to the stock speakers that are in the car currently:

Infinity Kappa 462.11cfp (for the front 4x6 spots, won't let me post links)

Infinity Kappa 52.11i (for the 6x9) rear fill spots, crutchfield says they have a bracket)

Now keep in mind I haven't listened to these in person, I only seem to remember that Infinity was at least semi-reputable when I initially did anything car audio related (pre-2003).

Now, before I get into my second question, I also want to say that I'm not dead-set on these speakers if you all have other recommendations. If you do recommend others though, please note that I don't want to spend more than $150 per pair ($300 for all 4). That needs to include shipping & tax. I also want them to fit into the stock speaker placements, as I want my car to keep its general stock look, and no need for me to modify (which I probably wouldn't be comfortable with anyway).

My 2nd question lies with weather to use my old 4 channel amp or not with the new speakers. The amp is an old JVC KS-AX504 (can't post links it seems) It ran the aftermarket pioneers that were in my old car just fine, but I want to be sure.

To be honest, I'm not sure running the extra 4 channel amp to the new speakers will be worth the hastle or not. Right now, the HeadUnit is wired up to stock speakers using stock wiring. Just swapping the speakers would be easy (comparatively speaking).

So, ultimately a couple main questions after all this.

1) Can I use my Old Sub and amp (JL 12W0 and Crossfire TEK 75.2)?

2) Should I use my old 4 channel amp for the new speakers I plan on buying (JVC KS-AX504) or just run them off of the head unit?.

2a) If yes, would there normally be any reason to believe that the amp can no longer be used?

3) As an aside, what is the benefit of running my normal speakers with an amp as opposed to directly from my Kenwood HeadUnit?

Had a couple pics of the stuff so you can see it's condition, but apparently I can't post links since I'm a new member. Let me know how I can post the links and I will.

Thanks for reading all this, I'll respond as I can with answers to any questions any of you might have. I eagerly await your responses, thanks ahead of time for everything!

You made this thread at 2 a.m. Not many people post in the middle of the night here.

You should gain clarity if you use an amplifier on speakers and not the head unit's internal amplifier. This is what makes it a worthwhile upgrade for anyone.

The main thing I hear as feedback about Infinity Kappa speakers is people don't care for the tweeters. People complain that they sound harsh, so that's one reason you may want to listen to them before you buy them. I think I'd like them, but I can't tell you what you like to hear. You could also look into JBL GTO speakers. They're from the same parent company but they sound different than their Infinity siblings.

it will work as a start, upgrade as necessary. posibly mod the front doors to 5.25's. may have better sound and slightly more output.

Maybe check into q logic kickpanels. post pics as you progress.

Thanks for the feedback so far. It seems the best thing for me to do is just take the plunge and try it all out.

I do have a follow up question though.

How important is buying the same "type" of speaker within a specific brand for timbre matching?
