Wierd subwoofer noise

I have a friend that is having problems with his sub. He says he never smelt anything, or heard anything going wrong with it. It will play the music but does not put out any bass just a scratching noise, that sounds almost as if you were to flick the cone of the sub. There is no cosmetic damage to the sub and he is really worried because he doest know if his amp or his sub is ruined. What do you think the problem may be?
