because the military needed a fast way for data to be communicated over long distances fairly quickly. the alternative was to physically send disks - and they developed the 'internet' to send this information using the telephone lines. the telecommunications industry cought on, and made their own connections through the telepohone lines, and after a while, started to sell these connections to the public, and the internet has been catching like wildfire ever since.

basically. its a very quick and easy way to;

1. make money

2. communicate

3. waste time

You know.......the funny thing is, I remember sitting in like 3rd grade reading our "Weekly Reader", and there was this article about this grand new "invention" that was going to allow us to link our computers to computers all over the world (mind you I barely know what a computer was). It had this corny cartoon-like drawing of the western hemisphere with these huge computers on each continent and a big wire connecting them all. I was in awe "Wow, that'll never happen. That sounds impossible" I thought (mind you, I was in like 3rd grade). Well...................here we are, and I was wrong.

Actually the internet was started over in CERN in Switzerland, I think that is where it is located. It was a place where the scientists could have a central location to share their findings and discuss issues and so on.
