Why New Music Doesn't Sound As Good As It Did

I heard the dumbest song on the radio today. Some rap talking about shoulders chest pants shoes or something like that... What is happening in the music industry. Rappers are rapping about ay bay bay and shoulders and shoes. I heard a country song from brad paisley sayin he wants to check his g/f for ticks... Where do they come up with this stuff?

LOL What about that one girl singing about her lip gloss??

This thread is retarded.
And so is that article... it's what... a paragraph or two. GREAT PROOF!!!

Not.

Did you click the link within the article? It has a nice demonstration that I thought someone could learn from....but...nevermind.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/*******.gif.a649d21efc0d1fd4890a6428166586c1.gif ......the thread is now retarded. Somehow we went from a sound quality discussion to "which uneducated rap star has the dumbest lyrics" Don't they ALL have the dumbest lyrics?

Nobody is doubting that digitally increasing the volume of a recording damages music quality. But that article offered absolutely no proof that it actually happens. Do I think he's making it up? No...I'm sure there are a number of albums like that, do I think it's a huge industry wide problem? Who knows, but that article didn't provide any evidence to support that claim.

I found this on another board but thought it was interesting enough to share with everyone here. I was quite surprised when I busted out some old (late 70's) recordings and compared it to some new stuff. This article is 100% on the money. We're being duped.

Welcome to a long, long time ago, but this is still worth noting for those not familiar with the loudness war. I question the validity of your second sentence though: is that an effect of precedence, or legitimate? Why did you just suddenly recognize this?

No doubt the effect of maximizing the volume on the track distorts the sound....whether or not it is some huge industry wide problem, or actually happens, is difficult to prove. I'm sure it happens sometimes though..all artists/studios/labels/producers are different.
Actually a very well documented issue. In many mastering and recording industry magazines there have been editorials pushing for a stop of this ridiculous practice. The dynamic range and crest factor of recorded music has been on a steady decline.

music went downhill when tupac died IMO
El Oh El.

Eagles: Hell Freezes Over>any recorded album. Ever.

Not even close, but a very good album for sure.

Go buy Alice in Chains Unplugged //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

First off you should know a couple of things:

A) I'm almost 40

B) I've been out of the car audio (or any audio) game for about 10 years.

Lately when setting up a system I will use music to tune with. Always have, always will. So I figure a more modern recording will have better (cleaner) sound for level matching and light tuning. Not to mention it's what the end user listens to as well.

But to me, everything sounds crappy. I was wanting to blame it on the equipment. "This new equipment sucks compared to what we had back in the day. " OMG I was turning into one of those old, pipe smoking, suspender wearing, bearded home audio weirdos with their tube amps and reel to reels.

Even my system that I've been working on for over a month (build log coming soon) sounded "crappy" to me no matter what I did. I just bought a 31 band EQ to tune it ,which probably would have told me what the problem was once I put an RTA on it, but until then I was questioning my sanity. It's very difficult to level match your mid/high amp with your sub amp when the music is compressed this much. Why are the drums always muddy? Now I know why...

Tonight, I broke out some old Telarc discs and some of my autosound2000 discs and did a little quick tuning, and BAM...night and day. Perfect? No. But I just made a huge step in the right direction.

Granted, I deserve a huge kick in the *** because I should have been using these tools for tuning the entire time. But I made a mistake and assumed, or was just plain lazy. A little of both.

How come I never noticed? I noticed, but I never gave much thought to WHY. Being "old" I do most of my listening at home. Same equipment for over 10 years. In the past few years I've become much more interested in modern jazz and country instead of rock because it sounds so much better on my home stereo. I really thought I was just getting old and talk radio was the next step in my evolution. But dammit, I like rock. I really like it. WTF. I don't think I've ever done an A/B comparison to Nickelback and The Tarney Spencer Band. If I did listen to something old it was something like "The Descendents" that has a crappy recording quality anyway. Now that I pull out those old forgotten recordings and listen carefully, I'm amazed.

Slowly, over time, I never noticed the record industry was screwing me . Like that frog in the boiling water? But do a back to back comparison and the difference is stunning.

It was a small epiphany for me and I thought it would help some others to understand how this affects their listening experience.

You may need to broaden your musical taste //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
na..im only 18 but i listen to early 90s gangster rap and up but the majority of the time its newer stuff..dont really care for any other genre and its a fairly new one

i just purchased a cd (i know, but i couldn't find a download for it anywhere!) and i gotta say, it sounds excellent... i have no old cd's to compare it to... but compared to other music i have downloaded (regardless of how high the bitrate is) it sounds so much better. now i am assuming that since it's an indie label, that may be why it sounds better, because of the lack of big industry influence... but i have no clue to be honest, im just rambling....

oh, fourth of july, fourth of july on the plains is the cd im talking about...

check em out if you think you'll like a weezer/cake/mates of state kinda sound
