No doubt the effect of maximizing the volume on the track distorts the sound....whether or not it is some huge industry wide problem, or actually happens, is difficult to prove. I'm sure it happens sometimes though..all artists/studios/labels/producers are different.

Many of my CDs are from the 80's through the early 90's and that guy is spot on, my best sounding CDs are the oldest ones I own (82-88).

Two years ago I bought a new release by Rush, a double CD of a live concert from Rio with every single hit they've ever had on it.

Its so distorted from trying to record it above digital 0 (theoretically thats the loudest any digital recording should reach on peaks) that I've never listened to even the first disc past halfway because it sounds like crap.

All live show recordings i've ever heard sound like sh*t to me. They are all terrible.

but Rush is a great band!
