Why doesn't this sound right?

Can you solve it?
Ok guys and gals, I need your help. I have another thread going and I'm pretty sure I have this wired right, but I don't have much of any low end happening. I'm running 2 ED 110v.2 (dual 2 ohm) with a ED nine.1. I'm running it at 2 ohms which should be 900watts. I have them in a 2.25 CF sealed box with 2 1/2 pounds of polyfill in the box. Both subs are running but at 3/4 gain I have very little low end up front. I am running 0 gauge wire. What can I do? Where am I going wrong?

Thanks,

Justin

Just to give more detail on how I have it wired. Each sub has the + to - wired and then + to + to the amp and - to - to the amp. The amp has 4 speaker inputs. I am connected to two of them.

What would happen if I plugged each speaker terminal into each of the subs and then plugged that into the amp? I've never used a monoblock before.

Let me throw this at you all as well. If the box is 2.25 how can I figure out driver displacement to figure if I have too big of a box. What happens if my sealed box is too big? I mean I know buy another one, but what will the subs do?

Thanks!

Justin

just put some pieces of 2 x 4 in there to take up space.

So your thinking it has to do with the amount of space the box has making the subs not perform?

When you wire the subs up and it says to connect the + to the + etc...you can wrap both wires together and put them into the voicecoil opening, correct? Like the + from sub 1 to the + of sub 2 that then connects to the terminal to go to the amp?

While I'm on the questions role (LOL) can someone give me some idea as to how much extra room I have in my box right now? I mean with driver displacement? Everyone seems to have those fancy programs :p

Thanks,

~justin

the space shouldnt cause a problem like this

is this how you have them wired?

what you could do is unhook them from the amp and touch the wires to a 9v battery and see if the push the same direction.

they may be wired out of phase with each other and that would cause your low end to **** nuts.

if the problem isnt one of those then i am not sure what it could be.

Yeah thats how I have them wired. The one thing that is different from that picture is that where the photo has little circles where the wires meet, I have that spot at the voicecoil. So the wire from the one positive plugs into the wire on the others sub positive.

I will check out the phase thing as well. Thanks! thats a good thing to know about the 9v battery.

I'm thinking that I have something wired wrong though. This morning I had it on and it was bumping pretty good. Then when I got to work the protect light came on. So I'm thinking either because they are not mounted yet or because something is wired incorrectly.

The box is way too large for those subs. Put them in .5-.7 cu ft sealed each and they'll sound a lot better. That's gonna be a lot of 2 x 4s lol.

You didn't mention what HU? What's the line out voltage? I'm running a Nine.1 at 2 ohms, and my gains are set with a DMM to put out around 800 watts. The gain knob is at around 25% of max. 3/4 gain seems awfully high unless you're running a very low votage input.

The NIne.1 is not the type of amp that you need to crank the gains up that high. I'd check the amp output with a DMM. If you're getting any more than 44.7 volts AC(assuming the Nine.1 can put out 1000 watts @ 2 ohms, which it can easily do with healthy electrical), then your gains are set too high, and you risk damage to your subs.

If all that checks out, definitely verify the subs are wired correctly. BTW, the 4 speaker terminals on the mono amp are for ease of installation. The 2 negatives, and 2 positives are bridged internally, meaning you can connect to just one plus and minus, or use all 4 terminals.

If all else fails, what kind of car? if it's a trunk car, maybe you're getting cancellation? Try turning box around, or if you have Time aligment and phase adjustment for your subwoofer output on the HU, you can mess with that. I know time aligment helps the subwoofer performance in my car drastically.

If I wanted to put wood in the box, how would I go about that? I really like this box (its fiberglass and matches my trunk and took 20 days to get here LOL) and would like to keep it for awhile. I do have a member on here that will build me a box, I just need to get back with him (gf had an accident and I kinda stopped for a bit). I'd like to make this one work for the time being.

I'm going to run a DMM tonight to get the gains set right. I think I may actually have the gains on both amps too high and that is making for a battle. My headunit is the Clarion VRX935VD 4 volt pre-outs 0 gauge wire capacitor.

Thanks for the info on the monoblock, it was confusing me. I just read the gain setting guide in the amp section. Going to figure that out too. Its SQRT (Power*ohms) if I remember right, so should I base that on 900 watts or the 1000 that you mentioned? Or is it possible for me to test it?

The car is a 2002 dodge stratus R/T.

Thanks for all your help!

Thats one of my thoughts. Although I really like the subs (i've heard many good reviews). I want to keep with accurate base more than spl. I guess I'll look around. Any suggestions?

He's got two perfectly kick arse subs, If I were him, I'd keep the subs, and just build a proper sized sealed box.

As far as what to set the gains to, I'd say anywhere between 900 and 1000 watts @ 2 ohms is perfectly safe. sq rt of (900x2)=42.43 volts AC, sq rt of (1000x2)=44.72 volts AC. Make sure you use a 0db test tone, not -3 db or -6db ones that are floating around. Also, do not use tones created by NCH tone gererator, they are -12db, way too quiet, and you end up setting your gains way too high.

You do have a trunk car, and after reading the owner's manual for that deck, I still can't be sure it it has time alignment when in stereo mode. For sure, it does in 5.1 mode (nice). There might be a phase adjustment in your setup somewhere too, but the manual wasn't too clear on all of that. If all else fails, you can just try turning the sub box around.

Oh, and as far as putting 2 x 4s in the box to fill up space, I calculate how many inches of 2 x 4s I need, then cut in pieces to fit on the bottom of the box. Then I use Industrial strength Liquid nails to glue the chunks of wood to inside of box.

Just doing some quick calculations, your box is 1 cubic foot too large, that means you need to fill up about 1728 CUBIC INCHES of space. That's a friggin lot of 2 x 4s, like 27 ft. worth, good luck lol //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Ok so I rewired the subs and added 20 ft of 2X4 LOL. I also made sure the gain was at 43.5volts (too cold to get exact) I'm going to let the liquid nails dry tonight and plug it back in tomorrow after I install an amp rack. Thanks so much for the help and I'll let you know how it sounds!

Thanks again,

Justin
