Why are ported boxes generally bigger?

though that is part of the reason there are several other contributing factors. As you increase volume, the length of the ports dont need to be as long allowing for larger port area and decreased port noise. Though i dont have a great explanation for the next reason, most would agree that larger boxes generally sound deeper and increase spl (due to the increased air volume/movement i think). thats all I have....im sure someone else may offer a more in depth explanation.

There is a point where bigger isn't better. Also the bigger the box the less power handling the sub will have. If your box gets too big it can act as free air.

its not power loss...its decreased power handling, meaning the bigger you go, the less power (watts) the driver will be able to safley handle.

shivas dont require alot of air space....like 1.5 or so recomended isnt it??? now i always suggest 2 - 2.5 tho.....

I didn't see a recomendation for the Shiva, but they give examples of a 2, 3, and 5 ft ported box. 2 ft tuned to 25, 3 ft tuned to 20, and 5 ft tuned to 18 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif
