Who's heard of...

The older style of foam surrounds will dry rot over a period of several years...older Bose and Boston Acoustics tower speakers from the '70s and '80s are particular victims to this. Tolerances will get looser as the years go on, but there are plenty of 10 year old speakers out there still doing an admirable job.

Over time the subs/speakers suspension will loosen more and more. And, as Jack said, the soft parts can dry rot and/or crack. But they'll have to be near a quarter-century old before you really have to start worrying (or they must have used very low quality parts).

no this kid was talking about his POS Visonik's wearing out. he's saying something about them not being as loud as they used to be when he first got them. he also said how it 'happened to his friends jl's'

What is happening is likely psychoacoustics. They're aren't getting quieter, he's just getting more used to them and their output.......so they don't "seem" to be getting as loud as they used to because it is now just "normal" to him. This is why people are constantly upgrading to more and larger subs. They have something for so long and they get used to it, so it seems less impressive. So, they upgrade again until they get used to that and it seems to be "lacking" again, and so they upgrade again.

If he took them out for 3 or 4 months and didn't listen to any bass for that time, then put them back in....they'd likely sound loud to him again.

No, start out with a good system...train your ears to know what good sound is like. You'll get used to it eventually, but what's wrong with getting used to a killer setup? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Of course, it has the drawback of making you think your friend's systems are broken, or turned down //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

You never want to go too loud or you'll start damaging your hearing (regardless of what your mind is perceiving).

I think you are the smartest guy in this forum
Not by a long shot.

Maybe on tubes and older analog gear, but have you read some of my newbie comments in the box designing forum? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

There's always something to learn...and what's cool about this forum is that there's a group of individuals that individually know a little about everything, know a lot about a little, but collectively know a shitload.

freshman this year.

I had delusions of becoming an engineer 1st semester...EE or CE...but calculus > me. Technically I'm undecided right now, but probably going into business/finance with a bent towards law.
