Who's Going to Slam MORE?

Alright, here's the situation. My best friend moved up to Wisconsin from Pennsylvania a couple years ago. After talking and planning on me visiting him, we discussed car audio somewhere in between.

He seems to think that his setup should beat mine as far as SPL and SQ goes. He also gave me that "10"s are better than 15"s because they are 'punchier' and don't sound as muddy, especially for fast paced musc". What do you guys honestly think?

His Setup:

Vehicle: 2003 Lowered Ford Focus (All hooked up)

Headunit: Blaupunkt Monte Carlo MP34

Comps: Stock

Comp Amp: Runs his stock Comps on his headunit

Subwoofers: 2 12" Kicker L7's

Sub Amp: Rockford Fosgate 1500 watt Amp

Enclosure: Custom Sealed Box

Wiring: 4 AWG

Battery/Alternator: Stock

Other: Lightning Audio Cap

My Setup:

Vehicle: 1997 Nissan Ext Cab Pickup Truck

Headunit: Pioneer DEH-860MP

Comps: 6.5" Image Dynamics Chameleons

Comp Amp: Pioneer GM-X364 (150wattsx2@4ohm)

Subwoofers: 2 12" JL Audio W7's

Sub Amp: JBL 1200.1 Amp (I know I need another amp)

Enclosure: Sealed Box

Wiring: 4 AWG Stinger

Battery/Alternator: Optima Yellow Top/Stock

Other: Dynamat in the doors

Would I beat him SPL or SQ Wise? Or both? I know that my setup gets LOUD as hell, and it SOUNDS very good.

SQ = I've never been impressed with either sub. But you have good comps and he's running stock, you'll own him in "true" sound quality

SPL = both can get stupid loud, but he is giving his subs the right amount of power while you are severely underpowering yours.

Basically, it's going to come down to install (as always). No real way to tell without listening to them.

And don't let him run that "smaller subs sound better" crap. That is a load of shit. It's the box that gives a sub it's "sound", not the diameter of the sub.

I agree with what you said. I haven't seen his install, but I hope to beat his. I am underpowering my subs, but they still push and sound great. I'm not going to be able to buy another amp for a month or so until I get more pay, and finish with all the other things I have to pay off.

As far as that 15's aren't as good BS, that really pissed me off. Him and I are great friends, but it seems he was pulled into the Rockford/Kicker phase.

BY THE WAY, I was thinking about taking out one of the W7's, and making a new box and porting just the one sub. Does this sound good? The sub could get around 1000-1200 watts with a nice ported box.

i would port them both very low tuning like 22- 27 hz i don't think, given done poroperly, you would loose much if any sq with a tuning that low and gain some spl

The reason I say this (speaking of SPL only here) is that he's feeding his subs right about the amount they need to shine, and he's playing an SPL based sub. Now...the W7 will get extremely loud, but not with 600watts in a sealed enclosure imo.

If he had ported you would have no chance, unless of course you ported as well....sealed it will be close, but if it's too close in actual numbers to tell then he'll win because distortion of the original sound (low SQ) employs a false sense of true loudness.

It's cool that you're giving an honest opinion, thanks. You would actually be surprised at how hard these dual subs get with 600 watts though.

I built my setup with SQL in mind. Hence, the ID Chameleons and JL W7's. Both VERY capable of getting insane loud, AND sounding good. I was just wondering what you guys think. Also, keep in mind that my setup is in a truck cab. The cab will act as a "box" as well, and the sound will resonate louder. I can't wait to see what happens. Plus, in about a month, as stated, I'm getting another JBL 1200.1 amp when cash comes in. 2 W7's + 2400 watts = Sexy nice.

Oh, also, I think you forgot to factor in that I have an upgraded component system, whereas his is just stock running off his headunit.

well as for as SQ goes, anything is better than stock speakers, so you'll definitely sound a lot better. Jeez, with what hes running i doubt you can hear any of his highs and mids. His seems like it would sound loud as hell, but like crap.

Welcome to the current generation of car audio enthusiasts. "You can barely make out any of the words, and the bass sounds like it is just one continuous bassline, but it's loud as hell!"

You'll destroy him in SQ no doubt, but SPL, i would definitely give it to the Kickers. With some decent power and a good ported box for your L7s you could take him in both I would imagine.

Personally I have issue with 1 part of your post and most will have issue with me (as usual).

You stated "systems being better as far as SQ and SPL goes"...To me....BIG DIFFRENCE BETWEEN SPL AND SQ..sure you can have a great sounding SPL system..and obviously a LOUD SQ system..But I am confused on who wins in a SPL/SQ battle.....since personally I see a diffrence betwwen the 2 especially in a competition..

As I once stated..To some.."SPL is thier SQ"..while I subscribe to the theory that "SQ is perfect reproduction of music"

For me he wins in SPL.....

But the fact you have Chameleons as comps and he has "STOCKS" alone is hands down your SQ victory..

FUNNY HOW THINGS CHANGE ALSO...Some on here consider me a NEWBIE yet I was a post whorree over 2 years ago (2002 not 2003 as stated on profile??) I just was off the site for over a year!!!

a year go I once got BLASTED for making fun of guys who only add 2000watss of BASS to a stock set up...I think these people are the "Negative side" of Car audio..Personal opinion...I mean I got railed...BIG TIME!! I got called stuff you can't post anymore...LOL

Things have changed on this Forum and in the Stereo culture..But overall I think that first guys system is BOOTY!!!! and I will bet he is the one who instigated an SPL battle..with his BASS only system..Overall his system will HIT HARD..But what a Gay set up in my opinion
