Which would be better?

A friend of mine is interested in a small system. He is looking to spend around $150. I can get this for $100 and pick a box up for $50:

or I have an old Alpine Type R 12 (6-7 years old) in a box I could let him use and let him spend $150 on an amp. Which do you think would work better for a beginner system? Thanks.

I guess it isn't bad for starting out for a little bump. Is new and probably has at least a 1 year warranty. I really didn't look.

I say try the other way though and see how he likes the sub being it is old and all. Then spend the money on an amp. Might find a decent one in the classified section here. Then if sub goes he could save up for that down the road.

Personally me though, I would rather start off with a nice head unit, componet system and amp.

I have a fosgate amp I can hook to the type r and show him to see if he likes it. The Kenwood combo would be brand new with warranty. I have heard that the old type r's werent that great, which is why the kenwood is being considered. Since the sub is so old, I am afraid that it may go out soon (which is why I am not really comfortable selling it). Any suggestions? He listens mostly to rap and likes it to be boomy (opposite of me, I am a SQ guy). Thanks.
