Which test tone to use to set gains for my sub?

I'm gonna be putting in a 12" Type R (SWR-1242) into a ported enclosure tuned to ~31Hz , it will be receiving 350W RMS.

I was wondering what Hz test tone I should use to set the gains on the amp. I'm guessing it would be more accurate to use the right test tone and turn it up until I hear distortion, then turn it down a bit, rather than using a bass heavy cd.

50hz, set it according to jl's tutorial.

I don't have a voltmeter at the moment. I was hoping to do it by ear for now.
