Should have said "in the right box", aka, tuned low enough. Even with a 35hz ported box, the response curve of a comparable sealed box for the same sub won't beat it in output except for below 30hz somewhere. The discrepancy from ~40-45hz to 30hz in the ported box would be huge(6-9db), but that's what low tuning is for...which will allow you to beat the sealed box in output at even lower frequencies. If you tune from 27-28hz with a sub that works well in low tuned boxes, you can trump the sealed counterpart from 20hz and up(to a point) with ease, and really, what more would you need?
