Which is a better setup for SPL?

Go with the SDC's either way, if you can fit 2 15"s and make it work than go for it. It would get nice and loud compared to your old system. If you can only fit 12"s stick with the SDC's and it will still be way louder than your old system and sound great. Also those SDC's are underated power wise and can take about 1000 watts so if you have the money get a more powerful amp, something around 2000 watts. Maybe the aq2200d.

why 12s? and you're not actually going for "SPL" with Hype Rs or 2.5s..

You're just looking for a loud daily system, I'm assuming..

You can fit 2 15" in the trunk of a Malibu.. that's probably your best bet for a loud daily driver.

IMO, the 2.5s are louder, Hype Rs sound a little better.

Also, for an SPL setup, you can safely tune the SDCs higher, which might be peakier, but louder on the meter. Type-Rs like around 31-34 hz. SDCs like 32-38 hz.
