Where to measure port from?????

I just recently found out i need to have my port length 5 inches. What i was wondering is; do i measure the 5 inches from the inside of the box or do i measure it from the outside?? I'm thinking the inside because the 3/4 inch mdf would really make the port length 4 1/4 inches right from the outside, right?
