You DIY guys think we as retailers owe you something.... we don't owe you anything, when all you do is complain about what we charge for something (in business it is known as building value into a product or service) Go to a mechanic and ask him to work on your car for free (or for less money) and see what he tells you. Better yet try to tell a car dealership that you think they should only charge you 20K for their 50,000 vehicle. (If you want quality products you will pay for for them that is how business is done.) Levi's over some wal-mart brand jeans, shopping for Nike shoes over some knock off brand, lexus or a kia, oakley's over the 5.00 swap meet sunglasses.
you guys act like Car audio is the only industry that does this... open your eyes and look around you will see companies and industries that are much worse.
And if jeff is only making less than $400 profit on a pair of speaker that retail at 999.00 then he is cutting you a deal. All of you seem to forget that there is tons of overhead for us to run our shops, and until you know the ins and outs of out day to day (which will vary from shop to shop and city tiocity, you have no clue, so you run a business if it's not a car audio shop it doesn;t matter what you think because you business is not our business and they do not run the same.
You cry about what some guy who owns a successful shop charges you, don't buy his gear but don;t bictch about his pricing, when the gas you run in that car just set record profits of almost 15 BILLION dollars for ONE company. and you probably pay 6 dollars for your Starbucks, and 2 dollars for a bottle of water.
But GOD forbid you pay good money for something of REAL value.
DIY'ers much like Competitors are a small group, the difference is that most competitors know if they want the best products they will have to pay more for them.
AS FOR RESPECTING YOU AS CUSTOMERS:
This whole thread is exactly why DIY'ers do not get "respect", not always and not everyone of you are the same, but when all you do is complain about how much we charge or how we do not want to sit and talk for 4 hours in our shops about product (that person most likely will never buy.) I love to talk car audio, and I am happy to help anyone who shows me and my company the same RESPECT they expect.
And finally in response to the comment about car audio going to "shit" because Brick and mortor comapnies are "Charging to Much" this is blatant ignorance.
We are not charging unfair pricing, as installers we are required to be skilled in multiple fields above and beyond simple auto repair.... yet a mechanics is charging on average $95-125 p/labor hr to plug in a machine and have it tell him what to fix on your car... he fixes it you pay and go on... we not only have to beable to diagnose and repair we must be able to find new ways to make thing work in your vehicle, integrate it in so that it is flawless for your operation, make it look like it came that way fromt he factory (or make it uber flashy and spectacular, all the while doing it in a way that someone else hasn't done before.) this now a days requires us to be mechanics, paint body, upholsters, wood workers and welders above and beyond eletricians. now on top of that, we work on all makes and models of vehicle, not just one make or model. we also have to beable to do it faster now then in past years, due to the average persons impatience. (this again does not apply to every customer)
The other reason "CAR AUDIO is going to shit is the **** internet *****s selling junk made out to be good stuff, or good products sold cheap and then no warranty to back it up giving customer a bad taste in their mouth for the products.
