When Picking Drivers?

-lowest Fs(I hate the sound of a sub with a 32hz fs... you have to tune too high..) -most useable for my application

-long useable throw

-good reliability

-must NOT fatigue over time
thats not necessarily true. my btl has an FS of almost 37hz. in 4.5 cubes @ 33hz, it plays as low as my buddies 15" xxx in 4 cubes @ 29 hz, and gets much louder down there as well.

as for what i look for...good price, reliability, proven performance history. things like that.

1. cosmetic

2. build quality

3. linear excursion capabilities

4. power handling

5. cone material, surround

6. voice coil

7. compagny reputation, reviews, feedbacks and many research

8. Customer service

I question your buddy's install then. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

One point at least for me personally, and it is only a small portion of the market but I look for a good quality sub that has a small mounting depth. This is mostly due to me having a pickup truck where I can't move the back seat and I am stuck with the room I got. Also the ability to work well in a small enclosure, I tend to prefer stealth installs versus just being stupid loud even though that is fun too //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Otherwise cosmetics comes into play, I don't think many people want a bland looking driver even if it sounds amazing. Price verse power handling is also something I like to look at, but I will pay more if I hear a good reputation from a company both on the performance of their product as well as the integrity of the people standing behind the product.

I won't pretend to understand all the T/S specs but I am trying to learn, just my 2 cents

i installed them both //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

im not saying the XXX doesnt get low. i have said many a times that people have said X driver is a low end driver. hell they said that about my mag. and i have always said, that i have never heard a woofer that is a low end monster like the 05 xxx and that its the ONLY driver ill consider a low end beast.

and then i got my btl. both are low end beasts, and again, are the only drivers i will consider true low end monsters.

btw: you also have to realize there is quite a bit more power being sent to the btl, which is why its louder. im trying to be as fair as i can be (even though its unfair by nature) in comparing both subs at their rec rms wattage.

i dont mind a bland looking driver, but i do mind a corny looking driver.

The amount of chrome, carbon fiber, and level of BS behind the speaker. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
is that the thought process that went into the ICON //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.

you know what i find funny about this thread?

IA is basically asking us what we want to see from audio companies...yet there is only like 10 people who gave an opinion on what they want to see.

and then when IA comes out with a next generation funky pup, everyone will complain.

worthless ****s

I was going off the IA slogan.

But being serious, Neil stated pretty much my feelings, application based and company behind it.

no doubt. how a company carries themselves speaks VOLUMES about them

for example Scott sent me new tinsels for my BTL recently.

the catch being:

1) the BTL isnt a warrantied woofer

2)i am the 3rd owner of the sub

3)the failure was due to a recone done by the first owner who cut the tinsels too short

4)the first set of tinsels got lost in the mail, scott sent another set to me, both times i offered to pay for shipping and the product, and neither time was i asked to pay.

that earns HUGE respect in my book, considering i was expecting to pay for them since before i even emailed him AND scott took a loss in money TWICE to keep an ex customer happy (i bought a pair of 18" bl's from him a while back)

You won't get that kind of service from DD. lol

well.... there is something wrong there...

when you play below Fs basically you get extremely limited output and overexcursion...

free-air..... The overall q of the system will have alot to say about how fast your driver rolls off too.
