When is an amp necessary?

I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander. The factory audio system kicks out 140 watts. I just ordered a new receiver and speaker system from crutchfield. Here they are...

I do like to listen to music loud, but I also do not need a ton of base. I don't listen to a ton of hip hop or anything, but like I said, I do like to turn up the volume pretty loud. I don't know a ton about car audio, but I read from some customer reviews that to get your full moneys worth on the speaker system, that you should pair it with an amp as well.

Are amps really more important for the bass or would I notice a big difference on the entire system? I appreciate any help anybody can offer me.

Thanks in advance!

with component speakers such as those you almost always want to use an amp... will make a huge difference

have you heard those speakers are you set on them? cause you might be able to find something better

Hey guys, thanks for all the quick responses. I really appreciate it.

I actually ended up going with this system instead..

What should I look for when buying an amp? I'm a college student so I don't really have a ton of money to throw around. I'd need the best bang for my buck if possible.

Would one of these 2 work? I don't really know what it means when it says the first one 65x2 and the second is 200x1 for the RMS Power Output Does the 200x1 mean it only powers one thing? As in, it should really only be used for a subwoofer while the first one can hook into two speakers? Or am I totally off track here...

Thanks everyone

The 'x1' is how many channels of audio it can drive. 65x2 means the amplifier can drive 2 channels of audio, 65 watts to each; left and right, usually //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. 1 channel amplifiers are for subwoofer amplification, generally, though you COULD buy 2 1 channel amps and run for each side of your speakers...if you were crazy //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Personally, i would want at least 2x100. 2x65 would STILL be alot better than your deck's power, however. Depends on your budget, really.

I'm actually selling my 4channelx50watt (2x140watt bridged) Eclipse amp this week as i just upgraded to a new amp.

If you are willing to buy used, you can find some great deals here in the for sale area.
