What's your favorite box building tool?

I am actually looking for that wire looking thing they had a booth at dbDrag finals. It looks like a long roll that can be bent around stuff and then placed on a sheet of mdf for tracing. I looked for it at local shops.
I think the booth was mobile dynamics or something like that. The roll is maybe 2 or 3 feet long and made out of some kind of rubbe.r
You can get one in the drafting section of Office depot. Less than $10 IIRC

thx to helotaxi and ramos!

Who knows the specs of screws and pilot holes one would recommend for different sizes of MDF. If you do, perhaps the table below could be completed.

MDF SIZE Screw length & Thickness Pilot hole length & thickness

0.75"

1"

I assume the countersink size would depend on the diameter of the screw head and the perhaps the pilot hole length should be the length of the screw being used.

To "Saywhat?": What's a number 6 predrill?

It's a number 6 bit. Basically the thickness of a #8 screw minus the threads. That is the amount of material you need to remove to keep the wood from splitting when you put the screw in. The screw only needs to cut for the thread, no additional material is being displaced by the shaft of the screw.

I use a 1 1/4" #8 screw for just about everything but I don't normally work with 1" stock. I'd probably step up to 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 if I was going to use that. I also make sure the pilot hole is at least the depth that the screw is going into the material and usually about 1/4" more just to make sure I don't split it. The countersink I make sure is deep enough to at least flush the srcrewhead with the surface. If I'm planning to fill and finish the surface with the screw in it, I'll recess it about 1/16" below the surface to give me a pocket to hold whatever filler I'm oin to use.

I have a Hitachi one that shoots 1.75" brads I do believe... love it.

If you're going to start listing air tools, wouldn't the compressor be the tool you can't live without? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
Sure.

Nah , I can get by without the air tools . I would be lost without a tape measure though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yeah now that I realize it, the jasper jig is probably the greatest tool that I own. So ******* easy to use, and perfect to the T every time.

I can make one too, I've got some made out of cardboard. The thing is, for the money, you can make like 1000 or something different circles just by moving a little stick. No measuring required.
