What's wrong with tubes?

I understand that the ones you buy ****, and I avoid them too. But is there something inherently wrong with the tube design, or is it just crappy parts?

If I took a RLP, and put it in a correctly sized tube, would it sound any different than the same size box? And if so why?

Nothing inherently wrong with a cylinder-shaped enclosure...google "Sonosub"'s and you'll get plenty of hits that work really well //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The generic "bass tubes" that you generally see are pretty low quality, though.

Bazooka, which originally was called Southern Audio Services, (allthough often looked down upon now) revolutionized enclosures when they came out with their transmission line tubes back in the late 80's. Their design is still great, abeit in goofy enclosure versions these days.
