What's wrong with have 10 inch subs?

so lets say im running 6.5 fronts AND 5.25 rear fill....and lets say the set up could either be 2 subs or just one(i dont mind one). the aim is SQ with about 300 rms at 4 ohm per channel on a 2 channel amp...which sub(s) would you recommend?

If we are just discussing cone size here, imo 10's or 12's will match up to 6.5's well, I wouldnt go bigger than that, unless you're just wanting a booming system with little concern for SQ (blending). But, I really hate speaking that generally, as it also is affected by the enclosure type/alignment, xover settings, etc. With 6.5 non-dedicated midbass drivers, you wont get alot of low end extension, so build the system to extend up to 80-100hz or so.

i run 10's and compete with them. as a matter of fact at all the local shows my 2 10's are louder on 30 sec f music then any other sub there. INSTAL INSTALL INSTALL.

ok guys. this is it.

I want you guys to build my system.

my car is a 1998 5 series bmw

amp I have is a JBL 2 channel amp 600.2......300rms at 4 ohm per channel 600 at 2 ohm bridged.

it could be one or 2 subs. size 12 or 10.

I am aiming for SQ. good sounding. The speakers will be SLC component front 6.5 and coax rear 5.25.

I dont know much about tuning. All i know is when i set up my system and tune it..if it sounds good.. i leave it as is. i know nothing about tuning numbers.

i never wanted to give up all the space i had....i had 2 12's and now went to 4 10's with more power..i would hope the sound is better but i dont care about louder........but it will be louder im sure. i also went to 2 10's in my truck instead for 2 12's it is all about install....Do any of you remember when BOSS had the world record with 40 10's and some other stuff

I am of the opinion that, when possible, it's a good idea to purchase the largest diameter subwoofer you can afford and reasonably fit into your space. Why? More cone area = less excursion for a given output level. Less excursion for a given output level = less distortion. Less distortion = better sound quality. Better sound quality = happy listener. Happy listener = .....I don't know, I'm out of stuff to say. But I think you get the point //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

But to answer your original question....there's nothing "wrong" with 10's.

lol. why do I always thought 15 sounds worse than 12. Thats why I was never interested in them..untill i came on this board.

I agree with that, but I thought the discussion was not about output levels and sq inches of cone area, but cone size. Running an 18 versus a 10 would mean the 18 wouldn't need to work nearly as hard to reach the same output level as the 10, which would mean less stress/distortion/etc. But things get more complicated when you start trying to compare different options that would add up to about the same cone area (one 18 versus multiple smaller subs).

As always, things get too complicated. *sigh* //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

It maybe just due to cone area and/or low frequency extension of larger subs, but it seems like the larger the subs sound travels further (ie boom) I have had 8's and 10's. The 8's have been higher quality/power than the 10's, and seem to have just as much bass but the 8's only get loud in the vehicle. Even when I have test them in my unattached garage closed and walked outside into my house, I can barely hear them. I know my 10's were heard 1/2 mile away. As I have gotten older I appreciate that the stealthiness of my subs. However the reasons my last 2 vehicle have had 8's is due to mounting constaints, if I had room I will skip over my 8's get 10's.

If you want to buy subs based on cone size alone, consider what the rest of the system is. I wouldn't even consider running an 18 when my front stage is 4x6's, nor would I run a 10" sub if my midbasses were 8's. Its all about blending, output and frequency response. Everything else is just generalizations by people who dont know better.
It amazes me how often people ask which size subs to buy, and nobody thinks to ask what the front stage consists of. Well blended systems are an endangered species it seems.
But most people now want total spl no matter what they say. At least younger guys. Sure if it sounds good its ok but as long as it is loud.
