What's up with this?

Whatever the cause negligence has got to be a factor... The box was obviously getting wet and in the desert a sub should never be exposed to this much moisture unless the box is getting soaked

I'm sure there is more to the story, we know why it happens to door speakers but here water would have to be getting into the box, The wood would let go first I would think

 
sand blast it, that will make it look brand spankin new again. not shiny but there wont be a trace of rust

I'd def brush it off gently tho...before it got any worse. Rust is metals worst enemy.
