i know that from my experince,,, SQ is a non consideration in an open air environment... It is relatively an impossible challenge in an OPEN BOW boat...
so... the point is SPL... to be able to satisfy the occupants as well as the "neighbor" listeners" I have actually made plans to connect my Vdrums (yes, i am jazz trained drummer) to play through the system while we use a power inverter to power a guitar and bass amp, as well as a directional mic (sax) to be able to show the versatility of the system,"
BUT REALLY,,, I have very low spl... Maybe with the engine hatch closed,,, and a close spl meter... i would have 120-130 MAX.... t(his is before i but 3x the power on the subs that i plan for next month. (lets see if the subs can take it)) SPL numbers dont actually mean shit though,, on an open bow boat) ..when you are so open.... it is actually what you hear and what your boating friends can here (if receptive) and its mostly about what your passengers can hear and the rider behind you can hear. And to do this... takes a much different approach to CA... beefing up cpmpression horns. (for those that consider the rider the most important listener) and at the same time.... giving wooofers a **** load more power than they need... because they are in an open environment... but not compromising the cones at the same time. and at the same time,, realizing the venuerability of your system. Although most CA speakers can handle a marine environment for a time... the wear and tear takes apart CA components much faster. So the replacement factor is much more aggressive on CA components on a boat than in a car. Unfortunately, only a couple of companies provide marine versions of their high end gear. Memphis is one.. but look around.. you will never find it on any commercial sites....
BUT... for the real.... in the world of subs (at least those without paper or paper composite cones)) the subs can take a splash... And in my opinion... although my boxes are resistant from water,,, being ported with aero ports,,, even if small splashes of water hitthe box.. they are thrown back bout by the air..... BUt then again.... sometimes i do pull the ports and wipe up a bit......
Anyway.........................
