Whats the difference between an sql sub and a spl sub?

What does SMH mean?

Loudness is subjective. What some consider to be loud may not not be loud to others.
If SQL is to become a defacto term, what volume classifies as being loud?
Well, then you get into SQ or SPL, as both measure sound pressure.

Or do you mean loud at a different freqencies? Because 100 dB @ 30 Hz is quite a bit different than 100 dB @ 10,000 Hz.

Well, a person could simply go by the numbers - e.g. 110db is generally considered loud. But sitting there listening to 110db may have many saying that 110db isn't loud at all.

Its the same with the 'SQ' term - one person could say 'Wow, this sub sounds great!', and classify it as a bonefide SQ driver. On the other hand, another could march up and say 'This sub sounds like utter shit! Its muddy and bloated.' Is it still considered an SQ sub then? And who would make the decision that it is?

an sq sub wont be muddy or sound like a frog is dying...if you need a refference go to a shop that sells really highend home speakers and bring some cds.....
Ah, but that's the problem right there. You see, you may hate that muddy-type of sound, but that doesn't mean it is bad. Someone else could very well correct you by saying that he/she does not hear a muddiness and may find the sound quailty quite satisfiying.

And that my friend is the root of the problem. If everyone in the world agreed that Speaker A had superior sound quality, there would only be one speaker available - Speaker A.

And please don't mention 'high end home speakers' - that's where it gets really grey and anal. Believe me, I designed high end home loudspeakers for a living years ago. I walked away from that clutching a quote from a man who was all so much more intelligent than I:

'If you had the ability to feed everyone on the planet, and did, there would always be someone who would complain about the service.'

Best,

Mark

umm yuh......its real freaking easy to tell. use a known cd with staged and life like sound. play it it should sound real and not go boom boom blah blah... was really easy to tell in a car too cars that had muddy and exaggerated bass scored low pretty much across the board

I guess that question can be construed as funny, but it is a legitimate question.

If he says he hates Bose, someone else will belly up and say they like it. Who is right?

if it has no highs and has no lows it must be bose......... everyone will say its subjective until you base your listening to criteria. some peoples opinion might sway but keeping it serious say part of that criteria were to be making a life like reproduction to what the source material is. not talking three six mafia stuff but actual music with real instruments.
