whats bad about having a box too big.

I have two mtx 15" 8000 subs, and i plan on building a bigger sealed box. I do not know the recomended box size, but if i build a box that is bigger then the recomended box size, what problems will i see? can i hurt the subs in any way.

my current box dimentions are 32x 17 x 17. and each sub is in its own chamber. i plan on building a box that is 34x 17 x 20. and i plan to make it one big box with no chambers. but i will support the box by a few 1" dowwels.

thanks for your time.

well the specs u gave seem ok for the 2 15's...the box is around 2.5 cubes sealed for each sub....just put around 5oowatts to each sub a you will be fine....

why not port them ..u will get more output and u can still use the 2.5 cubes

porting boxes are much more complex, and i this is my first box. so i plan on building this sealed box as practice, then later build a ported box. the reason i figured a bigger box would be fine is cause im underpowering my subs a bit. the rating is 500/1000, and im putting in somewhere from 350-425 into each sub.

http://mtxaudio.com/caraudio/archive/ - check and see if your model is listed there. Then you can get box specs for it.

Anyways; problems with too big of box? Not really problems, just trade-offs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif A bigger box will have less overall output than a smaller box, but the bigger box will have better low frequency extension. The bigger box will have higher efficiency, which means lower mechanical power handling (i.e. your sub will not handle as much power mechanically). Bigger box will also have better transient response and a smoother frequency response.

so basically what your saying is the bigger the box, the better, and your box can never be too big??

No, it's all personal preference. A lot of companies actually recommend smaller size boxes because it gives a nice hump in the response in the upper bass/lower midbass region, which is what gives the sub the feeling of being "punchy" or "tight". Also because of the higher output levels. Basically, it's the type of sound that the run-of-the-mill "street beater" prefers.

soo if i make a bigger than reccomended box, the bass would be more "boomy" than "punchy" (i would think cuz its seems to be one or the other),

however, a bigger box would tend to get lower frequencies better than a smaller one right?

I have found that if your want a really big rumble then go with a slightly bigger box, but if you want something that will hit hard and thump loud and a little bit more responsive then go with a slightly smaller box...the dim. that the manufacture gives you is kinda a mix of the two...or with the last set of MTX and Infinity that I had

No, not boomy. Actually, the bigger box would typically be "more accurate" than the smaller box because of it's better transient response and flatter frequency response. But, when people hear that hump in the response in the lower midbass/upper bass region, they perceive that as being "punchy".

Yup

I usually aim for a Qtc of around .7 which to me gives you the best of both worlds. Just like was said earlier it is a tradeoff. I would look at the box recommendations and if it is like: 1.5 to 2.5 I would go with 2.0....there are calculators that can give you an idea of how a box will sound...or at least the Qtc. Go to this link and scroll over on the right to #116 and then to the bottom of that and it give you the calculators to tell you the Qtc's of boxes with your driver. good stuff

oooOOOoooo oaky that cleared a heckuvalot up for me, thanks sqeak with your infinite knowledge and wisdom //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

If you're using a Qtc of 2.0, you must have something really ****ing wrong with your ears ...
I believe he meant that if the recommended box size was 1.5 - 2.5cuft, that he would go with 2.0cuft as a rough estimate of a box with good tradeoffs. Not that he would go with a box with a Qtc of 2.0 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
