whats 3db and -3d

Test the tones on your amp? What do you mean by that?

The difference between the two is how "loud" they are. A 3dB tone would actually be a boosted tone and would be clipped -- don't use it. A -3dB tone will be attenuated (made quieter) by 3dB. If you're trying to set gains, do NOT use this tone.

 
the best way seems imo is to use a 0db 20-80 sine sweep. it the levels get about where they should be on the dmm turn it down and try again. keep trying it till you get it right. that way you'll know for sure you won't be clipping anywhere.
