what would cause my car to shut off?

i had a 320w amp, kinda junky as it was 12 years old, powering two 10's. one day i was listening to music with them pretty loud, and the car shut off and would not start until i unhooked battery and rehooked it. car has no known elctrical isssues and is fine after i removed that system. could it be my alternator? amp? any ideas?
