What went wrong?

2001 Alero.

My sons system/subs/amp was professionally installed with a factory stereo untill he could afford a new one. He finally purchesed a Kenwwood MP 235. We put it in. Spliced in the required GM Wire Harness to the factory wires, purchased and connected antenna adapter, put it all in and it worked GREAT. Except his right front speaker would not work. We pulled out the head unit to see that the grey/black wire for that speaker had come apart from the harness. We respliced it in and reinstalled the unit. And now here's where it goes bad......we reconnected the negative battery cable, turned the car on and the subs started humming. They worked just fine before we pulled it to connect one speaker wire? We had to turn the car off. Pulled it all out again to look at the harness and wiring. Everything looks to be intact....... Can anyone please help us.......? When not connected to amp, everything sounds great. What went wrong? So to make a long story short, start car and subs go off at top end and we have to turn car off right of way. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for any help you can provide.

MTX 942 amp.......Apline Type R 12" subs

some how you got a wire (or 2 ) wrong, id disconnect everything but the power and ground, and re-connect wires 1 at a time and see which one 'triggers' the subs. or give a professional place $30 to do it for you before you damage any equipment.?

Yes, everything is wrapped with tape. I may re do all the connections with butt clips. Would that be better? Antenna? What are you saying here? I purchased an adapter for GM cars, hooked that up and pluuged it to the HU. I understand what you say about wires being wrong, but again, I thought all I did was reconnect the Grey/blk wire that had come apart. I then pushed the mess of wires back into a very small area to get them out of the way to allow room for HU.

Everything worked GREAT except the RF speaker previus to me removing it to reconnct the speaker wire. Boy is Dad a bad guy now!!! :)

Sorry..just thought I'd post in "General" and since it seems to be a sub issue, here to. I apologize. Just frustrating. But I think I'll proably do what you say and spend some $$$ and use it as a learning lesson. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your help

im guessing even tho wires are the same color on the harness they go to a different place?

if ya know what i mean.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/*******.gif.a649d21efc0d1fd4890a6428166586c1.gif

I "think" those were all OK. Everything worked great. All I did I thought was reconnect the RF speaker that had come undone (black/grey) and put it back together......//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

I hooked up my sons ipod directly to amp. Turned the gains up on the amp since I had them down to avoid the loud hummm, and when the ipod was hooked up, I didn't get any humm. Does this mean its for sure my HU? I'm only guessing this since everything worked as wired before I rehooked up the RF speaker wire. I suppose the RCA's could have gone bad? What would cause that? Anyway of testing without buying new ones?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

my cheap *** dual did that, i grounded the rcas and it stopped.
On yours, so as sonn as you turned the switch on the car, it was an extremely loud hummm? and to ground the RCA's I take it I wrap wire around the input jacks on the amp and then ground it?

when you unplug the rcas does the hum go away? i'd wrap them in electrical tape so make sure no metal part of the connector is touching anything inside the dash...

Yeah , I plugged in an ipod with RCA's directly into the amp and no hum. The HU is surrounded by mostly plastic and was working great until I rehooked up one speaker wire.....confusing..working 1 minute, hook up one wire that cam eloose and now I arrived at Humming amps at the turn of the key switch HU on or off: mad:
