does the size really make a difference???

all i read here is about how prefab boxes **** because they dont match the volume specifications for your subs. i see all these calculators and formulas that take 50 factors into account for people to get exactly the right internal volume for their subs...

Then i go out to best buy and im looking at boxes and i ask the car audio guy which one is best for my subs. he shows me it and it has 1.25 cu. ft. ported. But infinity says my subs should have 2.00 cu ft. ported. I tell him that and he says, "That doesn't really matter unless you are competing, you wont notice the difference." I see people on here with the same type of subs as me building boxes with way different volume than recomended and the people on here saying they have good designs...

what the ****. im so confused. first you guys act so crazy about having exactly the recommended volume then i hear the guy from best buy and I see lots of people here building boxes way different than recomended and having good results.

i dont get it. somebody please explain. w

that is because most people at best buy are morons and will pretty much flat out lie to make a sale. The box is i would say more important than the woofer. You could have the best sub in the world, and in the wrong box, it would probably sound like shit...

so i need to get a box with exactly the recomended volume?
different boxes will make your subs perform differently, you spec the box to make the sub sound how you want it

If that makes sense //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

ideally, yes. Usually manufacturers will give you a range. Say.. between .7 cubic feet to 1.0 cubic feet.

I've found that the sound I wanted was in a sealed, 1 cubic foot enclosure. I used to have 1.33 and didn't like it.

alright thanks. that clears thing up. the manufacturer (infinity) says mine should be 2.0 ported with a 12.75" long port with 4" diameter. how far away can i go from the 2.0 on either side and still get good results? and what should it be tuned to for a good mix of sq and bass?

I would really love to see that guy sell shoes. "Well sir, you said you are a size 9, but take these size 10 since unless you plan on jogging or running it won't matter.

There are so many different factors that go into box volume. Power handling, type of music you listen to, size requirements, etc. All trade offs really. You can run a smaller box and get higher power handling in some cases. Some box volumes might produce a peak in the sound that some people like (and some don't). Again, some people like big *****, some guys like butts, some guys like legs. Who is right? Many manufacturers might give a range or multiple box sizes (JL Audio used to have a book with recommendations and grades. If you want SPL, this box/sub combo might get a B+, but for SQ it might get a C- because it wasn't natural (and for power handling it might get a B- as an example). All trade offs really. They gave several options that were geared towards a number of different power handling and music types.

haha..all that stuff about BestBuy is true.

i know because i worked in their car audio section, i knew their product and whatnot so matching a sub and amp was no prob. i would flat out tell people not to buy a pre built box if they want to buy a sub(s) amp combo, and the only thing i would sell is the type R //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif and the kenwood 9102D (but that is of course if the people had the money which they didnt) because the rest of the stuff there is crap cept the alpine digi amps.

the lead guy of the car audio actually got me moved out of the dept. because i proved him wrong about stuff so many times and he thought he was a car audio god.(former curcuit city guy). i posed the question of why BestBuy doesnt carry amps that do power at 1ohm and he told me that the only amps that could do 1ohm were audiobahn:laugh: and cost $1000, then the brand new manager told me that those amps wouldnt be good because amps make to much heat at 1ohm and they would shut off. i looked at both of them and called them idiots. i could go on for days.

i know i dont know alot about stuff but they are blatent morons most of the time. The only people i would trust giving me any advice about car audio would be the senior installers and i would still be hesitant

i now work in the recieving department. slinging tvs and unloading trucks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
