what subs are best for hitting lows but aren't loud

that "boom effect" can be noticed with most available sub woofers on the market, I don't know what to tell you about the "noise" -

I have heard of a special enclosure for people like you - its a special kind of sealed box - you make a 5 sided enclosure and then put your wired up sub woofer in the box and screw on that last side - this minimizes the boom effect and will take care of most of the "noise"...

maybe what you need is an under dash EQ with the power amp built in - rockwood, kenford, and sparkomatic still manufacture some really nice stuff.

You should have bought one of my avalanche 15's. Low end monsters in small sealed boxes.

If you want boom, low tuned ported, or sealed with a driver that has a low Fs. Then you will want to set the low pass crossover frequency low.
