So I am going to buy a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X590 which can play CD, MP3, WMA and also has an iPod connection and USB port. With all these types of connections there are many possible storage mediums I could use.

I know any would work but the best would be a mass storage device like a hard drive so I would not have to use tons of CDs with MP3s on them. The question is, how well does a USB connection work because it seems the cheapest solution would be to buy an external hard drive powered by an inverter and just plug that in.

Has anyone done a setup like this yet, if so do you have any advice or help you could offer?

Well I only have a little less than 7GB of MP3s, so I could either get two 4GB or a single 8GB either way it looks like I would be spending $80-100 for 8GB of flash drive storage.

I'm wondering if it is worth the cost or if there is a better alternative.
