what products to purchase? (newbie here)

Hi all - I am taking my first step into upgraded car audio. I have stock system (head unit, 4 speakers) in my 2003 Honda Civic. I don't have tons of cash, but would like to upgrade my head unit (to play my ipod) and add a subwoofer. I am very comfortable doing electrical work and the install, just with the seemingly 1000's of products available, I am lost as to where to start looking. Can you all recommend some items (and websites to buy from) if you were putting together a mid-level system (like $500-750)? Thanks!
