What new car?

I've been informed that a new car might be within my means sometime in the near future. I don't know exactly what my budget is going to be, but It's gotta be less than 3 years old. My mother is helping me, so she wants something that safe and practical. I have no problem working around those criteria, but I still want a good size engine.

Basically what I'm asking you guys is what car should I get that's a 2009 or newer, is safe, get's decent gas mileage, and is still fun to drive. I would set a price cap at 20k

Slightly out of my price range. I'd really like that 4cl engine though. The car should ideally have either a v6 (NA or FI) or a 4cl (FI ONLY)

safe, fun to drive, reliable, and a great value? Id go with a turbo subaru(wrx, legacy, forrester). Of course you dont get much snow where your at, but of all the cars ive owned my modded wrx was one of my favorites.
