im trying to get a more in depth understanding of why and how a good speaker compares to a bad speaker. obviously theres going to be a differnce between an xplode and an mt. does it have to do with the xmax, voice coils, type of magnet used? educate me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

The quality put in making a sub....That is why I like DD's...Each subwoofer is individually serial numbered..... How many sub manufacturers do you know of that do that? Each sub is hand assembled in the US....... Not assembled by an assembly line robot in china....Each sub is made with as many US parts that are available....Each sub goes through 3 extreme test before it leaves the door....not picking one out of random every 5000 or so....To me this makes a quality sub with true real world specs....

all the parameters of the drivers effect the way it will sound, and the box its in, cone material and shape everything about it effects the way it performs, thats why a $40 12" sub doesnt sound like a $400 one. a good sub / speaker, should make everything it plays sound like it was when origionally recorded in a studio. a good sub / speaker will reveal subtle differences in tonality, a lesser driver will make everything sound more or less the same. excellent question, welcome to sq //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

lol well i've always been a sq junkie, but i want to understand more about it. i've read http://www.bcae1.com maybe close to 30 times? and it doesn't go into great detail on the parameters. if someone has a link to another website, thatd be awesome.

im sure the build quality also effects a speaker in a big way, but what really makes speaker 1 better than speaker 2.

A good speaker turns the music in the wires into music in the air.

A good speaker does not fail under pressure.

A good speaker is practical.

IMO, these are the 3 fundamental principals of a subwoofer. The better a woofer can accomplish these 3 goals, the better the woofer it is.

i am also curious .. i looked at FI subwoofers .. and there are these options you can add onto the sub for more money .. what do those options do? just curious ..

Im just kidding bro, heres a couple of links to help you on your way

http://eminence.com/resources_data.asp

This is a really good one

http://www.caraudiotalk.com/audio-forum/showthread.php?t=1546&highlight=george

Also you can go to Madisound.com and purchase the loudspeaker design cookbook for about 11 bucks, good materials there man

But the basics for a good driver are dependant on what you are looking for obviously

But the type of materials used, build quality, t/s parameters all play a role

A speaker isn't much good without something to mount it too, such as a baffle or an enclosure

An enclosure is just as important as the driver itself, it will not perform well in the wrong enclosure

wow great links, this stuff is waaay more confusing than i thought. does anyone here actually buy their subs or speakers based on the t/s parameters?
