ccna, sql, get some PHP/.Net under your belt..

get your certs, get some projects to show for interviews and resume...

find a niche job.... IT guys like us are a dime a dozen...

Don't go for the Cisco crap unless you are convinced that is the way you want to go/be. Everyone and his dog are going for those lower level tech jobs. Its no different than how Novell was ten years ago and Microsoft was 5 years ago. Its just another wave.

If you are good at talking, telling stories and being convincing to higher ups, there is only one route that can secure you a good position where you will be needed/wanted and that is Information Security.

Look at CISSP, CISA and CISM certs - all in that order. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you land those, you can write your own ticket, especially in the US. With CISSP, you can start looking. The others are more gravy than anything.

I've still gotta get my CISSP, been slackin on that one. Have my GIAC GSEC, Sun certified Security admin, certified system admin, and certified network admin.

Certs are like college, they don't prove you know anything about your job, just proves you can study and take a test. It is good resume filler though.

I am focusing on the CCIE path myself, specifically in design. However VoIP is extremely hot right now.
