What IT ceritfication is the hottest right now?

Dont worry, none of that will actually apply to the IT job you get.
It never does.

Trust me, ive been in the IT field since 1991.
Indeed, if you don't have a niche job you can expect that Indians can and will do your generalized job for 1/4 of the pay

your degree is half the battle, maybe less... that doesnt mean you can perform under "normal working I.T. conditions"... get a job in the field and work your way up. I've been in the I.T. field for a while but havent moved up much.

It's a Information Technology and Informatics Degree from Rutgers University. I've taken classes in programming, web design, human computer interaction, lots of stuff so I'm wondering if I should go for more schooling after college to focus in a certain part of IT or I could get by without for the first few years. Money is tight.
get on down here at Hanson(sp) Robotics. cool stuff.

I found that you need to get into as many niches as you can because you never know where the industry is going to end up - nor how your industry fairs in your geographical region.

My niche was Industrial Automation and controls, then semiconductor manufacturing, then ended up in the High Energy Physics field. Im probably more engineering orientated then most IT people in general, but it helps to be diversified in industry.

Really, you need a break in a interesting position or place of employment. If you end up doing customer support right out of college or some shit, you'll end up hating yourself and your IT profession ... and maybe even going postal on your fellow employees with a semi automatic weapon in no time.

sans institute network security certification & ccnp or ccie
From where I sit security seems to be a good area to be in currently, alot of companies don't want their security work offshored. A good amount of companies are reaching out for security work to cover themselves for audits, etc.

Sans puts on great classes.

he's right, you never know where you're going to end up.

Good info in all of your posts. I started out with a simple electronics degree from a tech school..got on with a major telecommunications company and pretty much loved my job climbing poles, splicing cables, etc. Then I had a chance to get in on the DSL band wagon when it rolled into town and have been doing that ever since. Switches, redbacks, etc. Now my job has degraded/morphed/surplused itself to some sort of 3rd tier tech support and it sucks. The train is slowing down and I'm looking to jump off before it comes to a complete stop and I'm stranded.

I've found the best way to learn to hate people is work customer support. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/furious.gif.fc81ca146dbff91fede3ed290dbc4f4c.gif

Edit> And I see I misspelled certification in the title...NICE.

Planning and preperation does work, your not going to fall into your dream job.It happens, but I wouldn't count on it.
The tequila in your avatar is so ****ing good that I can barely stand to look at it.

I don't know why, and I've had more expensive tequilas here and there, but that ****ing Don Julio Blanco is so ridiculously delicious that I am literally considering throwing away my life, my dreams, and my career, just to spend every day juggling fruit for change, until I have enough to afford another bottle of that pure, crisp citrus ambrosia.

It's not just a tequila, but also an excellent career choice. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
