What is this!?

So I pop my hood to look for a hole in my firewall to run my power cable and I see this all over my negative battery terminal. I have no idea what it is.

Someone told me it was to keep the terminal from corroding? If this is wrong, what is it? If this is correct, will it affect installation of audio in any way?

if power is getting into your car from the battery now, why would it change when you hook up a stereo? you'll be fine, won't make a difference at all
